Village Darts Tournament
The darts tournament held at the end of April proved to be a huge success with over thirty people taking part. Teams of four competed against each other in a knock-out competition.

Each game was closely contested with the eventual winners being “James Blondes” who overcame the “Filosofers” in the closely contested final. The result hung in the balance up to the final throw. Congratulations to the winning team. Prizes were donated by David Bluck. Many thanks David.

Many thanks also to Steve Huish who organised the tournament and also the Carne Arms for providing the venue and the excellent food. The event proved so popular that it is anticipated another tournament will be held later in the year or beginning of next year.

Hemlock Poisoning
(Extract from Dai Lanolin: Scholar shepherd)
The sad ones down at the tavern gather
Motionless they sit silent and staring
Staring thro’ private voids and dead spaces
Wherein like evanescent Pimpernel
The flickering image of a dear friend
Returns and goes stroboscopic by memory.
“Bedevilled oatmeal” the miller murmurs
Moistening his powdered lips with real ale
Drawn from the barrel cool cooper’d in oak.
So out of the long silence they stare and
With nodding heads move like puppets
The sad ones mumble and repeat again
The miller’s phrase distorted by grief
“The oatmeal’s bedevilled, Beelzebub devil”
Irreverent a drunken druggist drawls
“There’s ergot in rye, there’s ergot in rye!
Then lapping their ale once more they lapse
Into taciturn sorrow sizzled by draught
And rising from a stool in inglenook
A Romany with pierced lobes laments:
“Oniton Lace they calls it, Oniton Lace
Scabhands and Kexies – my shepherd is dead.”

St. Donat’s Arts
Those of you who use St. Donat’s Arts Centre may be surprised to hear it is threatened with losing its Arts Council funding because of increased money going to the London Olympics.

I’m sure like myself you value the creative and artistic events the Centre offers and the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of different activities right on our doorstep in the rural Vale.

I like the salsa dancing week-ends, the Christmas and summer fairs, the cinema and the live music. I also love the opportunity to spend time in such a fantastic and beautiful setting.

News from St. Tydfils
The Christmas services in St Tydfil’s were very well attended with the usual very large congregation on Christmas morning. The season of Advent, comprising the month of December was filled with special services including the Nine Lessons and Carols and the Christingle service.

The season culminated on the 30th December when the congregation played host to the congregations from Colwinston and Llysworney – it being a fifth Sunday when we usually come together in that way. The crib under the tower was its usual lovely focus for prayer. It fills the whole of the north window and is a very realistic depiction of the stable scene. It has recently been taken down and the figures carefully put away because we have only just finished celebrating Christmas.

The great forty day feast of the nativity of our Lord comes to an end on the 2nd February in the festival of Candlemas. This day was traditionally the day on which the candles to be burnt in the church during the year were blessed by the priest. More to the point the day is also the feast of the presentation of Christ in the Temple. It remembers when Jesus was brought as a baby to Jerusalem to fulfil the requirements of the Law of Moses relating to first-born sons. He was greeted and hailed by the ancient Simeon as the ‘light to lighten the Gentiles.’ The day is all about light at the darkest time of the year and therefore candles are very appropriate to the theme.

Talking of lights we have had a great deal of bother with the controls for the floodlighting system for Saint Tydfil’s. At the heart of the system is a fiendishly complicated switch which would delight any watchmaker with its complexity. This switch has been giving us trouble but it has now been replaced – with a duplicate! – and it seems to be working as it should. This is expected to stop the lighting coming on and off at inappropriate times.

The church is open during daylight hours and you would be welcome to come in and admire the 15 chairs which now occupy the space under the tower. They are beech-framed, upholstered in claret coloured cloth and are very comfortable to use. The intention is to create within the church a place that is quiet and comfortable for private prayer. They face the north window – where the crib has been – and there is an opportunity to light a candle or use some of the prayer and other material that is available there.

The chairs, a bench in the churchyard outside the vestry door and a multi-light candle holder were dedicated by the Rector over the Christmas and New Year period. Those in whose names dedications were made were Geoffrey Norman GIDDINGS, Les and Mabel HEALE, Jennifer Mary HISCOCK, Emma Florence JACOBS, Richard Henry PARSONS, Dorothy THOMAS, Rosina McCarthy THOMAS, Sheila McCarthy THOMAS Patrick TURLEY.

Now we are in the season of Lent – the forty days and forty nights which lead us into the Easter celebrations. Easter is a moveable feast and occurring this year on the 23rd March it is just about as early as it can be. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon after the 21st March. You will note that us gentiles still use a Jewish way of reckoning the date of Easter by using the lunar cycle. It’s almost as arcane as the workings of that switch!

Llandow Newydd
Many of you will have already read or heard that crisis talks are to be held between the developers of the proposed “Llandow Newydd” site and Vale Planning Officers, following the apparent dismissal of the development in the “preferred draft strategy” for the Local Development Plan (GEM January 10th).

It appears that the developers are “disappointed” and of the opinion that Llandow Newydd is a sound scheme, and that not enough consideration has been given to the development at Llandow. They also propose to offer more cash to put a squeeze on the council.

There is currently a consultation period of six weeks which ends at 12:00 noon on 27th February for comments to be sent to Vale Planning Officers.

A thought for New Year
New Year is the perfect time to look back into the past and make plans for the future. In an effort to make our lives better in the coming year many of us make lofty plans and many New Year Resolutions. A few promises are kept, many though usually fail.

Here is an effort to understand the meaning, origin and benefits of New Year Resolution. It is hoped that better understand will help you make focused, determined and successful resolution this year.

New Year Resolutions are basically commitment or promises that people make to themselves. These could be promises to complete a project or to alter a habit for their own betterment. Since these resolutions are usually made in the beginning of the year, these are popularly known as New Year's Resolution. Ideally New Year's resolution should remain into effect until the goal is achieved. However, it has been noticed that most New Year Resolution are broken fairly shortly after they are made.

It is said that the tradition of making New Year's Resolutions was started by early Babylonians. Their most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment and begin the New Year with a clean slate. Some people believe that New Years Resolutions were once promises made to the Gods, in the hope that the Gods would grant them some favor in return, such as a good harvest.

It was also believed that breaking of New Year's resolution brought bad luck on the individual hence one was advised to be careful while making New Year's Resolution. In modern times, most popular New Year’s Resolution pertain to good health or good look. With obesity on the rise most people resolve to reduce weight by taking up exercises or by eating right. Other very popular and mostly broken resolution is to quit smoking and drinking. Students usually make a resolution to complete their assignments on time and staying regular with studies. Resolution of waking up early and sleeping early are also quite common.

Though many people make New Year's Resolution with enthusiasm and zeal, it has been noticed that most of these resolution fail shortly after. Experts feel that the reason for the failure is that most people do not back their resolution with proper planning. It is recommended that one should plan how to effectively deal with the temptation of giving up the resolution in the mid-way. Besides, it is recommended that one should take help of friends and dear ones to keep their motivation level high.
