Llysworney News June 2010
From the family of Peter Finucane Val and the children Claire, Richard, Kathryn and Andrew would like to thank everyone in the village for the kindness and support given following the loss of Peter. It was of great comfort to us that so many villagers attended the funeral and the refreshments at the cricket club. We would also like to thank those who have given cheques or donated via the webpage to the Marie Curie Hospice.
Should anyone further wish to donate the link is http://original.justgiving.com/peterfinucane The page will be closing on 19th June 2010. It is at sad times that we truly appreciated being part of the village. Val Finucane

Kilimanjaro Trek in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust I will be celebrating my 55th birthday this year so I have decided to set myself a personal challenge whilst raising much needed funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust as our 26 year old son Richard is a sufferer of the disease. I have therefore registered to try and climb Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 5896m and the highest freestanding mountain in the world. The climb takes place from 15th October to 24th October and to take part in the Cystic Fibrosis Challenge. I am asked to raise a minimum of £3,600 in sponsorship money for the charity which has to be sent by the end of August so you will have to trust that I will do it and not be defeated by fatigue and altitude sickness!
Cystic Fibrosis is the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited disease. It clogs the internal organs with sticky mucus making it hard to breathe and digest food and making the sufferer very susceptible to repeated chest infections. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK’s only national charity dedicated to all aspects of Cystic Fibrosis. It aims to ensure appropriate care for those with CF whilst funding medical research into the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis. At the moment it is an exciting time in CF research as medical trials have begun on CF patients using gene therapy which hopefully in the future will help to eradicate the symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis.
Please could you help me to reach my £3,600 target for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust by sponsoring my challenge to conquer Kilimanjaro. You can do this by visiting www.justgiving.com/Diane-BluckKiliClimb2010 and donating on line (it is a completely safe site), signing the sponsor form on the Carne Arms notice board (thank you Janine and Luke) supporting the fund raising events (see below) or just letting me know that you are willing to sponsor me. I am very grateful to those who have already signed my sponsor form. Now all I have to do is get training! Diane Bluck.
Afternoon tea and home-made cakes at Tudor Lodge Friday 14th May from 2pm to 6pm. On Friday, 14th May from 2pm-6pm I am holding a garden tea party at Tudor Lodge in order to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Kilimanjaro Challenge. There will be stalls (including a Bring and Buy) and the pool will be heated if anyone would like to have a swim (optional!). Please call in on your way home from work if you are unable to come in the afternoon. Tickets are £5 for tea and cakes. Diane Bluck
Little Fish Fun Club The Little Fish Fun Club will be meeting on Wed 2nd June in Colwinston Village Hall from 10am -1pm. If your child/children would like to attend could they please inform either Diane Bluck or Helen Sloane asap. Cost is £5 (£4 for siblings). Diane Bluck

Cycle Treasure Hunt 11th April After many years of treasure hunts on foot the clues in Llysworney have been exhausted so we are spreading our wings, or at least our wheels, with a cycle based event. Teams of up to 4 with staggered starts (and for some whose bikes have been ‘resting’ over winter that may be literally true) from 10.30am in the Carne Car Park. Entry fee is £1 per team.
All levels of cycling ability are welcome and points will be deducted for an excess of Lycra or yellow jerseys. The route is reasonably gentle (and short) using country lanes but does cross the main Cowbridge/Llantwit major road twice so please take care, and make sure there is a responsible team leader.
Even if the clues prove tricky it’s a great way of getting out and seeing spring in the Vale. Why not book your Sunday lunch in the Carne to round off the morning - 773553? (Oh, we have just given away where the route finishes). Peter Cole
Colwinston & Llysworney WI The next meeting of the Colwinston & Llysworney WI will be held in Colwinston Village Hall at 7.30pm on Monday 12th April 2010. The subject will be the Bra Lady, the speaker will be Wendy Collie. Visitors are welcome. Hilary Sheldon

Clipper Round the World In April and May I will be sailing a leg of the round the world clipper race. The race started from Hull in September 2009 and my leg is from San Francisco to Jamaica via the Panama Canal. There were 10 yachts taking part, all identical and sponsored by different cities/countries. I was due to race on the Cork boat but sadly it sank in the Java Sea after hitting a reef. Luckily no-one was lost or injured.
I will now be on the 'Edinburgh Inspiring Capital', leaving SF on the 11th April. My leg of the race finishes at Jamaica around the 16th May. If anyone wants to follow the race there is a very good website which shows the yacht positions throughout the race. www.clipperroundtheworld.com Click on 'follow' and then 'race viewer' - Edinburgh is the white cross on blue background flag. Do come and hear what’s happening in your village and we would welcome anybody who would like to become involved. It’s not onerous, we meet once a month and discuss and organise events for the whole village to enjoy. Melanie (Chair)
From the Murtons Stewart joins me in sending a HUGE thank you to all those who variously enquired after my welfare, sent cards, sent flowers, got shopping in for us and even supplied some cooked meals during my recent illness.
It all helped me through a bad time and we both appreciate your kindness enormously. My strength is still somewhat depleted but I hope to be out and about and back among you 'ere too long. What a wonderful caring village we live in. Very sincerely Marion

Home safety check Did you know that our local firemen offer a great service to survey your home and fit FREE smoke detectors, complete with 10 year batteries? Be safe and better protected at home. Call 01443 232400 to arrange for the experts to fix a time to visit you (some people in the village have already taken advantage of this service).
Llandow Community Council We have requested the Police to monitor the speed of traffic through the village with their mobile radar speed detectors. There is a high demand throughout the Vale for speed detectors, but we are on the list.
Our local County Councilor, Ray Thomas, held a ‘surgery’ at the Carne Arms on Saturday 16th January, making himself available to discuss local issues. Although advertised in the Gem at short notice, and emailing what contacts we had, only one resident came to talk to him. Mr Thomas has promised to give more notice of his visits in future.

Rector’s Ramblings What in common have babies, candles and bears? No, it’s not ‘Round Britain Quiz’. It is all to do with the calendar of the Church.
Forty days after Christmas comes the feast of the ‘Presentation of Christ in the Temple’; it is on or around the 2nd February. This reminds us of the occasion when Jesus, just forty days old, was brought according to custom to the Temple in Jerusalem by Mary and Joseph. There he was ‘presented’ or offered to God as a first-born male child. The custom was for the Temple officials to return the child to the parents after a small offering had been made.
Up until then the mother had been secluded from society but with the presentation complete she was able to return to the world. There is a remnant of that ceremony in the old 1662 Book of Common Prayer. It is a service called, ‘The thanksgiving of women after child-birth commonly called, The Churching of Women.’ Childbirth would have been an unpredictable experience in the 17th century so it is not perhaps surprising that they would want to give thanks. The service is still there in our current Prayer Book but rarely requested. So that is the reference to babies.
Candles? The feast of the Presentation is more conveniently called, ‘Candlemas’. It takes its inspiration from the words of Simeon in the nunc dimittis where the infant Jesus in the Temple is described as ‘a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel.’ This theme of light inspired the practice of blessing all the candles that were to be used by the church in the year ahead. Some of the candles would be blessed and given to those who could not afford to buy their own.
And bears. Well bears are supposed to emerge from hibernation at Candlemas – but you knew that. Peter Leonard

Tomato Bredie This is a fantastic stew that basically makes itself once you have it in the pot. It is of Cape Malay origin and seriously good in the depths of winter!
1kg of stewing lamb or beef
Enough seasoned flour to coat the meat
Vegetable oil and butter for frying
Garlic (to taste)
2 onions
A pinch each of dried oreganum, basil and thyme
6 tomatoes
2 tablespoons of tomato paste
A cup of stock
A glass of white wine
roll the meat in the seasoned flour and brown in batches in the oil and butter.
choose a pot that is suitable for slow cooking. You can make this recipe on the stove top or in the oven.
chop the onions, garlic, tomatoes and add to the meat.
add the herbs and tomato paste.
add the stock and the wine. Remember that the tomatoes are very juicy and add to the liquid during cooking. Don’t worry if the liquid doesn’t look as though it will be enough at the start of the recipe.
Give the meat a stir and leave it over a low heat for 3 or 4 hours at least or in a low oven (100 deg centigrade) for the rest of the day. I usually try and get it on by 11am for dinner that evening.
Serve with a starch of your choice. Cathy Bryant
Crime Prevention Advice Car crime can be a big worry for motorists. Protect your car by following our simple advice – it might just be enough to deter thieves from targeting your car.
Lock the doors and close the windows when you leave your car, however long you are leaving it for.
When parking at home, always use your garage if you have one and lock both your vehicle and your garage. If you do not have a garage, try and park in a well-lit area.
When parking outside, always try and park in an attended car park. Look for a public car park which is part of the police approved ‘Safer Parking Scheme’ and displays the Park Mark brand. Some car parks also have ‘Secure Car Park’ accreditation – look for the sign.
Don’t leave anything on display. Even an old coat or plastic bag can be tempting for a thief.

Christmas Messages Quite a few of us have decided that the money spent exchanging Christmas cards within the village could be sent instead to the Charities we support. It seems particularly relevant this year with many Charities struggling for donations due to the current financial climate. We thought we would put our Christmas messages in the December Newsletter. If you wish to do the same then could you email or telephone Bryn Miles by 25th November 2009. Tricia Turley & Melanie Hurst

Computer Problems Recently I had a problem with my home network that I was unable to fix myself. I contacted RockIT, a company based in Bridgend. They came the next day and in no time had fixed the problem.

Crime Prevention Advice Something to think about…
Identity Theft
Identity theft is when somebody steals your name and other personal information to commit fraud. In cases of identity theft, your financial information is often stolen and transactions and purchases are made in your name.
Identity theft is a form of identity crime – where somebody uses a false identity to commit a crime. You may even be framed for a crime if you are a victim. Did you know identity fraud costs the UK economy an estimated £1.2bn a year? That’s £25 for every adult in Britain.
Identity theft can be an upsetting experience for the victim. It can be months before the fraudsters actions are discovered and it can take several months more to sort out the problems created as a result. Always think before you give away your personal details. Ask yourself the following questions…
Who exactly is asking for my details?
What details are they asking for?
Why do they need to know these details?
Fraudsters will possibly go through your rubbish to find your details. Dispose of documents with any personal information on them securely. A shredder is one of the most effective ways.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOUR DIARY Sunday 11th October Village walk starting at 11am Don’t forget to join us for this very interesting walk with Paul, the Heritage Coast Warden. We look forward to seeing you in Southerndown car park at 11am. Any queries call Melanie.
Sunday 18th October Wine Tasting in the Carne Arms from 7.30pm The Village Association has arranged with Luke in the Carne Arms a special wine tasting with Luke’s Somellier Chris. Many of you will know Chris through the gourmet dinners that the Carne Arms has hosted in the past.
This is an opportunity to purchase some good wines for your Christmas celebrations. Committee Members will be coming around selling tickets for this event, but please ask for tickets in advance as this is a ‘limited numbers’ event. Ticket price is £15 which includes the wine tasting and some delicious nibbles provided by the Carne.
Sunday 22nd November Village Tidy Up starting at 11am At our last committee meeting it was agreed that the village was looking ‘unloved’ and in need of some TLC.
Some of you mat not know what a ‘Village Tidy Up’ involves. This is not just for a few committee members to get their hands dirty but an invitation to as many of you as possible to come out and tidy our village. For example there are a lot of weeds that need destroying outside most people’s properties and alongside kerbs. It is not only the pond area and play area that need attention but many other parts of the village too.
A large skip will be provided outside the Churchyard so we hope that many of you will come and give a hand. The more people that help, the quicker the job gets done! Let’s be proud of our village!

Saturday 23rd January Village Burns Night Details to follow nearer the time
The Community Association is also organising a guided trip to St Fagan’s early next year and a St. David’s Day Village Dinner. More details will follow nearer the time.
Harvest Meal Saturday 3rd October. St Tydfil’s Harvest meal will take place this year on Saturday 3rd October at Tudor Lodge (Bluck‘s home). The Harvest Family Service will take place on the following day on Sunday 4th October at 9.30am.
We are following the usual custom of a shared meal, whereupon everyone brings a savoury dish or a dessert, but this year as we are trying to raise funds for the church project we are asking for a small donation of £5 per person in order to help the cause. Children under 10 yrs of age are free. There will also be a raffle (any prizes gladly received!)
The Harvest meal will take place in the pool enclosure which is warm and comfortably seats 30-35 people. We will eat at 5.30pm, but people are invited from 4pm onwards to enjoy a swim in the heated pool if they so wish (optional)
If you would like to attend, could you please ring Diane so she can co-ordinate the food and keep a tally of the number of people. Alternatively, there is a list on the font in the church which you can sign.
The church is open on the Saturday morn (as it always is) so that people can bring Harvest gifts of fruit and veg to decorate the church for the Harvest Festival if they so wish.
Little Fish Fun Club The Little Fish Fun Club will meet on Wednesday 28th October from 10am to 1pm in Colwinston Village Hall. Cost £5 (£4 for sibling). If your child/children would like to attend could they please ring either Diane or Helen to secure a place. The Little Fish are again supporting Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, which involves filling a shoe box with small gifts which is sent to some of the world’s most disadvantaged children. If you would like to be involved in the project all you have to do is-
1. Find an empty shoe box and cover it in Christmas wrapping paper.
2. Decide if your gift is for a girl or boy aged - either 2 to 4yrs, 5 to 9yrs, or 10 to 14yrs. The labels can be downloaded from www.samaritanspurse.uk.com. Stick the label on the shoebox.
3. Fill your box with gifts. Samaritan’s purse suggests –
TOYS (something to love) soft toy, ball, finger puppet, trucks and cars, dolls etc.
EDUCATIONAL SUPPLIES (something to do) pencils, pens, crayons, notepad etc.
HYGIENE ITEMS (something to use) Toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, wrapped soap, flannel etc.
OTHER ITEMS (something to eat or wear) sweets (not chocolate) gloves, scarf, cap, hat, bangles etc.
4. Include a donation of £2 or more in a small envelope inside the box (or preferably pay online) to cover the cost of transport and secure the box with an elastic band.
5. Give your shoe box to either Diane Bluck (Tudor Lodge) or Helen Sloane (Orchard Cottage) who will take them to the nearest pick up point by the 20th NOVEMBER.
Details about the appeal can be found on the website www.samaritanspurse.uk.com as well as a list of what Not to send. DB

Golf League The golf League is under way with one game already played. The “Dream Team” (hot favourites before the start) were beaten by “AC/DC”.
Altogether there are twelve teams in the league. A reminder that all games are to be finished by 31st December 2009. LCA
Crime prevention advice Beware bogus callers. Bogus callers pretend to be officials from the council, engineers from gas, electricity or water companies, police officers or salespeople in order to gain access to people's homes and steal money or property. They usually carry fake identity cards and can seem very convincing.
How do I protect myself from bogus callers? If someone calls round at your home, it's best to take precautions: Put the chain on the door before answering it - if you rent your home and don't have a chain, ask your landlord to fit one for you. Ask to see identification. Check their identification isn't fake - ask which company they're from, then phone the company to check the caller is genuine. Look the company up in the phone book rather than using a number they give you. Ask a neighbour or friend to come round while the caller is there.

Llysworney News September 2009
The end of an era Following a brief but courageous battle with cancer sadly, on the 3rd August, John Sedgebeer of Keeper’s Cottage passed away.
John was a true village man and a colourful local character who was liked by all who met him.
In comparison with his long standing friends in the village I only knew John for a short period of time. However, I will still miss his wicked sense of humour and mischievous nature.
My thoughts are with Owen, his son, and his mother Mary, another village stalwart, who is currently in The Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend.
His passing is not only a huge loss to all his friends but also the village of Llysworney which already seems duller without him. Rhodri The Barn
Church Project Progress Catharine Bray has agreed to join our team and we continue to meet monthly. We have already received a donation from outside Wales which has given us great encouragement.
We are now in the process of putting together a business plan and beginning discussions with our specialist Architect. Church Project Committee

The walk is not too arduous and will last approximately 2 hours and suitable for all ages. Don’t miss this special experience.
There is no cost but a donation to the Heritage Coast organisation is always appreciated. LCA

Crime Prevention Advice Fit locks and other security devices. Make sure that all the doors and windows to your property have adequate locks, and make sure you always lock up before you go out! Doors should be fitted with a five lever mortise lock and windows should fasten with a key, which must then be kept out of sight.
However, make sure everyone in your home knows where the keys are kept in case of an emergency such as a fire. Doors and door and window frames should be strong and in good condition, so they can't be broken easily. You could also consider fitting:
- a chain on the door
- a spy hole
- an alarm.
If you live in rented accommodation and don't feel the property is sufficiently secure, ask your landlord to fit new or additional locks.

Village Inventory We are currently putting together a village inventory. Is anybody out there who has anything belonging to the village that we should know about? LCA
Llysworney Gents Dining Club The club is ever popular with a goodly number attending on each occasion. During the year the Shampan and River View restaurants in Cowbridge were visited with great success. The Raj Kinara Indian restaurant at the Fontygary caravan park proved to be popular. The Thai Orchid and Zia Nina restaurants in Bridgend and the Greek evening at the Laleston Inn were all well received.
September sees the club at the Trio Brasserie restaurant in Cowbridge on the 7th. The Carne Arms has been arranged as the venue for November. October and December venues have yet to be decided. Other locations have already been approached and agreement has been reached. David Edwards
Congratulations Congratulations to Catherine Miles on being accepted at the Medical School of her choice. Well done.

Llysworney News August 2009
Wet and Wonderful in the Paddock It couldn’t have been wetter if it tried, but did it stop the fun? Certainly not! Saturday July 11th was the Village Summer Event, with both of the village marquees erected in the Booth’s paddock; catering all in place, tables brilliantly laid, band on its way and the heavens duly opened.
How many villages could claim a summer event with a built-in water feature? The water cascaded between the two tents but the food, the drinks, the great band and the atmosphere were all brilliant. Dancing in wellies should be compulsory at village events from now on.
One extra excitement occurred when all the electrics to the band’s PA system suddenly stopped. No, it wasn’t the rain affecting them; it was the village’s oldest resident deciding she’d heard enough loudness and we should all go to bed, so she pulled out the extension lead plug. An ASBO is pending.
Fortunately, the sun actually shone on Sunday for the Great Llysworney Treasure Hunt and thanks to Peter and Janette Cole and Maria Martin and Jo Thomas for baffling everyone (of all ages) so brilliantly.
A final note that occurred by accident: the valiant team who met to disassemble and pack away the tents managed the task on the day that Nelson Mandela urged the world to spend 67 minutes (equivalent to his years struggling against apartheid) to do something for their community. So we did.
A big thank you to all those people who worked so hard to make the evening a success, committee members and non-committee members. Melanie LCA

Llysworney Golf League From August through to December there will be a village golf league.
The aim is to have teams of two people who will all play each other by the end of December on a “4 ball better ball” basis. Games will be played at the Bridgend 9 hole course on the A48.
The number of games will obviously depend on the number of teams entering. Dates and times of play will be arranged between the teams. If individuals want to play but have no partner (like me!) please put your name down and I will organise a partner.
The entry list will be posted in the Carne Arms from Saturday 1st August and will close on Saturday 15th August. The league results will be in the newsletter and in the Carne Arms.
An enormous trophy and prizes will go to the winning team.
Any queries then please contact me. Gordon Turley
A little reminder from your neighbourhood policing team Our PACT meeting at Ewenny Village Hall on Wednesday 19th August at 19:00hrs. All welcome.
Crime prevention advice Keep valuable items out of sight.
Try not to leave valuable items in places where they can easily be seen from outside.
You could also consider marking valuable items with an ultra-violet pen, so they can be identified if they are stolen.
Take photographs of items that can't be marked such as jewellery or antiques.
Think about what's outside
Never leave a key hidden outside your home (e.g. under a doormat).
Always lock sheds and garages.
Always put ladders or tools away - they could be used by an intruder.
Don't leave packaging for new appliances and goods outside your home. Always crush it and put it in the bin.

CHURCH PROJECT - Progress We are still very much in the early stages but have established a Project Team:
Rev. Peter Leonard Jeremy Rawlins Penny Snowden Diane Bluck Peter Cole Paul Booth Martyn & Melanie Hurst
We are currently working on a draft business plan and exploring sources of potential funding. By the Autumn we hope to be in a position to make a presentation to the village.
Your Neighbourhood Policing Team would like to invite you to… Our PACT meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 19th August at Ewenny Village Hall. Please come along if you have any issues or questions or even just come along to meet us.
Just because we are having the meeting at Ewenny Village Hall doesn’t mean only people from that village can attend. The meeting is for anyone from the Llandow/ Ewenny ward. Hope to see you there.
Crime prevention advice: Yard security: If you’re working in the front yard, lock the back door and garage. If you're working in the back yard, lock the front door and garage.
Don't keep ladders or other equipment in the yard that could be used to gain access to your home.
Keep shrubs, bushes, hedges, and fences to a height of three feet or less.
Solid fences can prevent neighbours from watching out for each other. Consider chain link or picket type fencing.
Residential lighting should be used to light up home entry points. Motion detector lights are an inexpensive deterrent for areas where continuous lighting is unnecessary.
