Refuse and Recycling

Top Tips for Recycling

Put all your plastic bottles and containers into your recycling bin.

Put all you glass bottles and jars into your recycling bin.

Put all your food cans (rinsed) into your recycling bin.

Put all old newspapers, magazines, junk mail, books, writing paper, cardboard and directories (including yellow pages) into your recycling bin.

Save all broken electrical and unwanted household items until you have enough to make a trip to one of the waste recycling sites in the Borough. Large items like fridges etc can be collected from your property by the Councils bulky collection service, but there is a small charge to cover the costs of the collection. If you don't have a car maybe a neighbour or relative would take them for you when they go.

Compost whatever you can if you have a composter and use your green cone, if you have one. This counts as a reduction in waste and saves the council money. It also helps towards the waste reduction target set by the government.

If you have something that isn't broken or worn out, but you need to dispose of it, try to find a good home for it or offer it to a charity shop. Reuse is better than recycling. Don't just throw it away.

Try and buy goods with small amounts of packaging or with packaging you know you can recycle.

Reuse what you can. For instance, use throwaway carrier bags more than once.

    Buy refills where possible.

Think about recycling and see how good you can be. Once you start you just get better and better.

Vale of Glamorgan Refuse Collection Dates

Refuse Collection

Black refuse sacks should be put out by 7am on collection day - and any sharp items should be well wrapped.

Bank Holiday Refuse Collection

We now collect refuse and recycling on bank holidays. This avoids the confusion caused when collection days are altered after bank holidays. Residents are asked to put out their recycling and rubbish by 7am as normal. For further information please contact Visible Services on 02920673000.

Householders and Traders

Householders and traders are requested to ensure any sharp edges are adequately wrapped before placing in bin liners.

Garden Refuse

Garden waste will not be collected if it is placed in black bags, which are designed for household waste only. To arrange for the collection of garden waste sacks must be purchased from the Vale of Glamorgan Council Finance Offices. Alternatively why not use a Compost Bin? Contact the Waste Management Section to find out about the excellent savings that can be made on buying your own home compost bins.
