Saturday September 4th at 7.30pm ‘Pimms and Picnic’ in the paddock. Our summer party this year is another great opportunity for a village get together. Bring a picnic and enjoy the evening in our party tents in the Booth’s paddock.
Music will be provided for your enjoyment and we’ll start the evening off with a free glass of Pimms. There will be a cash bar too. Tickets are on sale – your newsletter distributor will be coming round selling tickets for £15 per couple or £8 individual.
AND do you have a special piece of music that you would like played? Do let us know, tell your ticket seller or any member of the committee. Come and support your village, we look forward to seeing you there! LCA
Sunday September 5th – Village Duck Derby at 11am This is a first for Llysworney and promises to be great fun. The little plastic ducks will be on sale at the ‘Pimms and Picnic’ event the night before or you can buy your duck from any committee member.
Just turn up on Sunday down at the pond and watch your duck race. All ages are invited! You may be lucky enough to win the Llysworney Duck Racing Trophy. There will also be barbecues lit for you to cook your own hot dog / hamburger whilst the excitement builds. LCA
Llysworney Website We would like to thank the Carne Arms and Llysworney Garage for sponsoring our website and we continue to thank Bryn Miles for maintaining it. LCA
Village Annual General Meeting 10th May 2010
Chairperson’s Report The Association started their new year last May with six new members on the Committee and seven existing members. I don’t know how many years this village Association has been in existence but it must be at least 30 years and it is always good to see willing people prepared to give their time and energies to community events.
Most events arranged by the LCA don’t just happen. They take a lot of organisation by people who are already busy in their own lives but hopefully there is a degree of fun and enjoyment in organising something that the whole village will enjoy. To this end we try and organise events that will involve all age groups.
We started with a Summer Tidy Up on May 10th. Thankfully it was a sunny day and there was a rewarding beer at the end of the session. Sadly the numbers volunteering are diminishing for these tidy ups because of people’s own commitments but let’s not stop trying to maintain the high standards we enjoy in our village, despite the attempts of numerous lorries trying to destroy the grass verges, especially by the pond!
Talking of tidy villages I have only recently been approached by Basil Watkins (Judge of The Best Kept Village) to persuade us to enter the Best Kept Village Competition. Sadly this is the first notification we have had and as the judging takes place in June, I feel there is not enough time to enter. If people think it is worth entering next year, do let us know as we can’t enter if only a few people get involved. It needs the wholehearted commitment of everyone in the village!
July 11th - An evening to remember! The Summer Event and THE RAIN! I think we all deserve to pat ourselves on the back for the true British spirit that emerged that evening. I think you will agree that the committee laid on a feast and the ‘New Druids’ provided great music and entertainment. New guttering for the one tent has been ordered so hopefully that will keep us drier next time. A very big thank you to Peter Evans for organising storage space for the tents together with chairs, and crockery etc. It makes sense to store village property in one place.
July 12th - Thankfully the rain stopped and the next day we held a successful and mind boggling treasure hunt around the village. One for adults provided by Peter and Janette Cole and Joanne Davies and Maria Martin designed one for the children.
October 11th - Despite another wet day quite a few of us enjoyed a really interesting Coastal Walk with Paul, Warden from the Vale Heritage Coast. He is an extremely interesting man who knows his ‘stuff’ including pointing us to where ‘Hemlock’ is grown on the coast, and yes it is deadly poisonous!
October 18th - Wine Tasting in the Carne Arms. This was the idea of committee member Gordon Turley and was a great success. The Carne organised for Chris Rogers, a local sommelier, to come and talk and taste some fine red and white wines. The evening must have been a success judging by the amount of wine that was sold at the end!
22nd November - Another tidy up. I think it’s worth mentioning that if we have two tidy ups a year then the job is not so onerous.
18th December - A busy evening this one as we had Carols round the pond followed by the village Christmas Dinner in the Carne Arms. As always the Carols round the Pond was well attended and so well orchestrated by the Gordon family. We collected £141 for the Marie Curie Hospices. This was far more than we normally collect and helped by continuing the collection in the pub! Our village Christmas tree was up and lit for the evening. By the way this is paid for by a small grant from the Vale via the Llandow Community Council as are the skips for the tidy ups.
20th December - The Annual Children’s Christmas Party. Always well attended by the sound coming from the Carne Arms! A big thank you to Diane Bluck and her helpers for organising games etc. before the special visit from Father Christmas in his brand new Father Christmas outfit!
Burns Night - 23rd January. We thought it would be good to bring this event back to the village, bearing in mind the number of Scots living in the village, and the Carne Arms kindly agreed. First and second choices for Laird were not available so Martyn Hurst stepped in as he claims to have a Scottish left leg!
Unfortunately numbers are always limited for village events in the Pub but are always a sell out.
5th March - For the first time we thought it a good idea to arrange a St. David’s Day dinner for the village. Why hasn’t this been done before? Again, it was a sell out and to make it more Welsh we had the privilege of a young Harpest Bethan Morris and contributions in the form of poems and songs.
27th March - Visit to St Fagans. A perfect sunny day for a very interesting guided tour of St Fagans. A big thank you to Paul and Sandra Sullivan for organising this. Paul works at St Fagans and therefore his knowledge of the history made all the more interesting.
11th April - Cycle Treasure Hunt. It must be Peter and Janette’s addiction to cryptic crosswords that gives them the talent for producing these treasure hunts! Once again they came up trumps and I understand nobody fell off their bicycles during the hunt!
Llandow Community Council Just to remind you, the LCC is made up of volunteers from the villages of Llysworney, Llandow and Sigginstone and really acts as a liaison between the communities and the Vale Council. Your present representatives on the LCC are Martyn Hurst, Stewart Murton, Janette Shaw and Steven Huish. They keep us updated of any relevant news that may affect Llysworney.
Newsletter and Website I have heard from many people how much they enjoy receiving their newsletter each month. Once again, we must thank Bryn Miles for putting this together and organising the distribution each month. I would also like to thank all those people who send Bryn news for the newsletter. Without your input, there is no newsletter. If there are months when you don’t receive a newsletter, it’s because there is not much news! Please remember there are always spare copies, if not damp, in the Church porch.
We must also thank Bryn for maintaining the village website. For the first time this year we have managed to get sponsorship for our website, to pay for the domain name. For this we must thank, Chris in the garage and the Carne Arms.
St. Tydfil’s Church As we all know the Church is the centre of our village and, as always we must give our thanks to Rev. Peter Leonard for allowing us to occasionally use the building for other events (like now). As you are aware there is a very exciting project underway to improve and enhance the Church building and making the space available for wider community use. Although this isn’t a village Association initiative, many of us are involved with the project. As we speak, we are eagerly waiting a green light from the Diocesan Advisory Committee to proceed to the next stage. We will keep you updated.
I have mentioned all the fun events that we have enjoyed this year but one can’t help remembering the sad times too. The whole village feels great loss when someone dies in Llysworney and this year has been particularly sad. Mary and John Sedgebeer, Billy, Glyn Thomas and recently Peter Finucane have all been so much part of our village but it’s a measure of the strength of our community for the support given at these sad times.
Now I have some more important thank you’s to make on your behalf:
The Booths for the use of their paddock for tent events and all the help and support they give us.
The Steads for allowing us to use their kitchen for Carols Round the Pond and Jim’s annual brew!
The Brays for lighting up our lives with the Christmas tree and tidying up around the pond.
I have already mentioned the Gordon family for organising the music for Carols Round the Pond – what would we do without them!
And the finale is a very big thank you to our committee, Kathy Bryant our very efficient Secretary, Diane Bluck, Hilary Sheldon, Andy Bray, Peter Cole, Sue Hayes, Maria Martin, Joanne Davies, Sandra Sullivan, Bryn Miles and Gordon Turley and especially David Edwards. David has been our Treasurer for three years and now has to stand down. We thank David for being so diligent and efficient as our Treasurer.
I have only mentioned events in the village that the Association organises. You all know that there are many other activities in the village that we all enjoy which help make Llysworney the special place we all know it is. Melanie Hurst Llysworney Community Association Chair 10th May 2010
